DGT Warns Drivers Over Dangerous Maneuvers Near Emergency Vehicles at Roundabouts

Spain's Directorate-General for Traffic is cracking down on drivers who fail to yield to emergency vehicles at roundabouts, warning that dangerous maneuvers can result in 200-euro fines and point deductions.

Traffic authorities are concerned about the number of drivers making dangerous mistakes when emergency vehicles approach roundabouts. According to the Directorate-General for Traffic (DGT), many drivers lack the skill or knowledge required to react safely when ambulances, police cars, or fire engines are on urgent calls.

The DGT has highlighted a specific, dangerous habit: drivers exiting a roundabout from an inner lane and cutting across the path of an emergency vehicle. This forces emergency drivers to brake suddenly to avoid a collision. To prevent this, authorities are strictly enforcing penalties; failing to yield to a priority vehicle can result in a 200-euro fine and the loss of four points from your driver’s license.

Technically, drivers are required to slow down and allow emergency vehicles to pass without changing lanes in a way that blocks their progress. This is not just a matter of courtesy; it is a legal requirement under the General Traffic Regulations, which grant absolute priority to emergency services on duty.

Roundabouts are among the most common sites for accidents in Spain due to high traffic volume and complex layouts. Authorities are reminding drivers of their responsibility in these situations, as every second saved is vital when lives are at stake.
