The DGT has issued a reminder that failing to properly secure pets in vehicles is a legal violation that can result in heavy fines and poses a lethal safety risk to passengers.

Staying safe on the road during the holidays isn't just about your driving skills; it’s also about how you manage what—and who—is inside your car. The Directorate-General for Traffic (DGT) recently reminded drivers that securing pets is a legal requirement, not just a suggestion.

Under the General Traffic Regulations, drivers are responsible for ensuring they have full freedom of movement and a clear view of the road. Article 18.1 states that no object or animal should interfere with the driver’s ability to maneuver safely. Furthermore, Article 3 prohibits any behavior that could create a risky situation, labeling any lack of diligence behind the wheel as negligent or reckless.

Ignoring these rules can lead to serious safety risks and heavy fines. According to data from RACE, the penalties depend on the level of risk:

  • Unsecured pet: A serious infraction resulting in a €200 fine.
  • Pet loose in the car or on the driver’s lap: Classified as negligent driving, this carries a €500 fine and the loss of 6 license points.
  • Accident caused by a loose animal: Classified as reckless driving, this results in a €1,000 fine and the loss of 6 points.

Beyond the legal consequences, the main concern is physics. In the event of a sudden collision, an unsecured pet can become a dangerous projectile. Due to the force of inertia, an animal’s weight multiplies during a crash, posing a lethal threat to both the passengers and the pet itself. Authorities emphasize that properly restraining your pet is a vital safety measure that helps prevent accidents and protects everyone on the road.
