DGT Warns Drivers: Improper GPS Use Can Lead to Fines
Spain's Directorate-General for Traffic is warning drivers that improperly mounting or manipulating GPS devices while driving can result in fines and license point deductions.
As summer travel season arrives, many drivers are relying on GPS apps to navigate. However, the Directorate-General for Traffic (DGT) is warning motorists that while using these tools is legal, using them incorrectly can lead to fines.
The law does not ban GPS assistance, but it does prohibit negligence in how devices are mounted and handled while driving. Under Article 19 of the General Traffic Regulations, drivers must maintain a clear view of the road through all windows. If a phone mount blocks your field of vision, you could face a 100-euro fine. While this specific violation does not result in the loss of license points, manipulating your device while the car is in motion is considered a serious distraction and will lead to a point deduction.
To stay safe and avoid penalties, authorities recommend using mounts that attach to air vents, as these do not obstruct your view. If you use a suction cup mount, avoid placing it in the center of the windshield. Avoid accessories that attach to the steering wheel or rearview mirror, as these can interfere with your ability to steer and distract you from the road.
The DGT emphasizes that the best way to stay safe is to plan your route before you start your engine. Setting up your navigation in advance not only helps you avoid fines but also prevents the dangerous distractions that remain a leading cause of accidents on Spanish roads.
