DGT Warns Drivers: Improper GPS Mounts Could Lead to Fines and Point Deductions
Spain's DGT is warning drivers that improper use or placement of GPS navigation mounts can result in fines and license point deductions due to obstructed visibility and distracted driving.
The Directorate-General for Traffic (DGT) is urging drivers to be careful with digital navigation systems during summer travel. The agency warns that relying on technology while driving requires following strict rules; failing to do so can result in fines starting at 100 euros and the loss of license points.
The legal issue centers on Article 19 of the General Traffic Regulations, which requires drivers to have a clear, unobstructed view through all of the vehicle's windows. Any phone or GPS mount that blocks your field of vision is against the law. While using navigation apps is perfectly legal, you can be penalized for installing a mount incorrectly or interacting with your device while the car is moving.
Authorities recommend using mounts that attach to air vents, as these keep the device stable without blocking your view of the road. You should avoid placing mounts on the steering wheel or rearview mirror, as these interfere with your ability to drive safely. Suction cup mounts are allowed, provided they are placed away from the center of the windshield and are securely attached so they do not fall while you are driving.
Above all, the DGT stresses that distraction is the leading cause of accidents involving these devices. Adjusting your GPS while driving is a punishable offense that leads to a loss of license points. To stay safe and avoid penalties, always set your route before you start your journey.
