DGT Warns Drivers: Failure to Use Turn Signals Carries Heavy Fines
Spanish traffic authorities are reminding drivers that failing to use turn signals is a legal violation punishable by fines of up to 200 euros and a significant cause of road accidents.
Road safety relies heavily on drivers being predictable. The Directorate-General for Traffic (DGT) and the Civil Guard have recently reminded motorists that failing to use turn signals is more than just bad manners—it is a major cause of accidents on both city streets and highways. Under current traffic regulations, you are legally required to signal any turn or lane change to help everyone on the road stay safe.
Ignoring this rule carries financial penalties. Failing to signal a maneuver entirely can result in a 200-euro fine. If you signal too late or in a way that is unclear to other drivers, you may be fined 80 euros. Furthermore, it is your responsibility to ensure your vehicle’s lights are working correctly; driving with broken or dim turn signals is also punishable, as it prevents others from knowing your intentions.
Beyond the fines, road safety experts—including the RACE—recommend following the "Mirror-Signal-Maneuver" (MSM) sequence. By checking your mirrors, signaling your intent, and then performing the maneuver, you can better monitor your blind spots and avoid preventable collisions.
