DGT Warns Drivers: Eating or Drinking Behind the Wheel Can Lead to Fines
Spain's Directorate-General for Traffic is warning drivers that eating or drinking behind the wheel can result in fines of up to 200 euros if these actions cause distractions that compromise road safety.
The Directorate-General for Traffic (DGT) is reminding drivers that summer travel often leads to more accidents caused by everyday distractions. While specific habits like eating an ice cream or drinking water aren’t explicitly banned by name in the traffic code, they can still lead to fines if they distract you from the road.
The law requires drivers to maintain constant attention and full freedom of movement behind the wheel. Under Article 18.1 of the General Traffic Regulations, it is not the act of eating or drinking itself that is illegal, but rather the fact that these actions can reduce your ability to control the vehicle safely. Officers are also guided by Article 3.1, which prohibits any reckless or negligent driving that puts yourself or others at risk.
Fines depend on how the officer assesses the situation. A minor lack of attention can result in an 80-euro fine, while more serious cases of negligent driving can cost up to 200 euros.
With traffic density increasing during the summer, the DGT is urging drivers to stay focused. Even seemingly harmless habits can lead to dangerous situations if they take your eyes or mind off the road.
