DGT Warns Drivers Against Blocking Driveways to Avoid Fines and Towing
Spain's Directorate-General for Traffic is warning drivers that blocking private driveway access is a serious offense punishable by a 200-euro fine and potential vehicle towing.
The Directorate-General for Traffic (DGT) is reminding drivers across the country to be mindful of where they park, specifically regarding driveway access. The agency is cracking down on drivers who block private garages or entrances, even if they only intend to stop for a moment.
Under the General Traffic Regulations, parking in a way that blocks access for vehicles or pedestrians is considered a serious offense. According to Article 91.2, this violation carries a 200-euro fine, which can be halved if paid early. Authorities also have the power to tow any vehicle that is clearly causing an obstruction. Notably, these rules apply to everyone—including property owners who park their own vehicles incorrectly.
The rules also cover the use of official signage. While local authorities are responsible for installing and maintaining official driveway signs (such as the R-308), they have issued a warning against the use of fake or unauthorized signs. Placing a fraudulent sign is a serious matter, with fines ranging from 501 to 901 euros, depending on local ordinances.
Ultimately, these reminders are about more than just fines; they are about keeping traffic moving and maintaining order in our communities. The DGT encourages drivers to prioritize caution and respect for reserved spaces. If you are ever unsure about a parking spot, it is best to play it safe and avoid the risk of a fine or causing trouble for others.
