The Directorate-General for Traffic is urging drivers to perform essential vehicle maintenance and ensure they carry required safety equipment to prevent breakdowns and accidents during the busy summer travel season.

Summer is here, and with it comes some of the busiest traffic of the year. The Directorate-General for Traffic (DGT) is urging drivers to prepare their vehicles for long-distance travel, noting that neglected maintenance is a leading cause of breakdowns and traffic congestion during the holidays.

Beyond safety, there are legal rules to keep in mind. It is strictly prohibited to dump oil or other pollutants on public roads. If you need to check your oil, do so on a level surface with a cold engine, using the dipstick to ensure the level is within the manufacturer’s recommended range. Keeping your oil at the right level prevents engine friction and overheating, which is especially important during the heat of summer.

Your safety also depends on your tires. By law, tread depth must be at least 1.6 millimeters, and tires must be properly inflated—especially when your car is heavily loaded. Speaking of loads, be sure to pack your luggage carefully; how you distribute weight affects your car’s handling and your visibility.

Finally, make sure you have all required safety equipment before you hit the road. This includes your vehicle documentation, reflective vests, an emergency signaling device (such as a V16 beacon), and a puncture repair kit. Preparing your vehicle isn't just a formality; it is a vital responsibility that helps keep the roads safe and moving smoothly for everyone this summer.
