DGT Urges Drivers to Check Brakes Ahead of Summer Travel to Avoid Fines and Accidents
The Spanish Directorate-General for Traffic (DGT) is urging motorists to prioritize brake maintenance ahead of summer travel to ensure road safety and avoid fines of up to 200 euros.
As summer travel begins, the Directorate-General for Traffic (DGT) is urging drivers to prioritize the maintenance of their vehicle’s braking system. According to the agency, road safety during holiday trips relies on two main factors: driver skill and proper vehicle upkeep.
Beyond personal safety, keeping your brakes in good condition is a legal requirement. Authorities warn that driving with faulty brakes is a serious offense that can result in fines of up to 200 euros. Brake failure is also a common issue during mandatory vehicle inspections (ITV). Data from AECA-ITV shows that braking system issues accounted for 11.4% of serious defects found this year, making it the fourth most common reason for failing an inspection.
The DGT emphasizes that driving efficiently—by anticipating traffic and avoiding sudden braking—not only extends the life of your brake pads and discs but also helps you stay in control during emergencies. Experts advise drivers to watch for any warning signs and to visit a professional mechanic immediately if they notice anything unusual. Combining a thorough vehicle check before your trip with careful driving habits is the best way to stay safe on the road this summer.
