With the August 15 holiday approaching, the Directorate-General for Traffic (DGT) has launched its special surveillance operation. Officials expect 5.6 million long-distance trips starting at 3:00 p.m. on Friday, August 14. Given the high volume of traffic, authorities are urging drivers to take extra precautions before heading out.
Beyond traffic safety, authorities are focusing on legal compliance, particularly vehicle insurance. According to RACE, many drivers are confused about the rules. A common misconception is that you only need insurance if you are actively driving your car. However, the law is clear: if a vehicle is registered, it must be insured, even if it is parked in a garage or on the street. The only way to avoid this requirement is to officially deregister the vehicle with the authorities.
Failing to insure your vehicle can lead to heavy fines, ranging from 601 to 3,005 euros. In practice, fines are typically around 800 euros for parked cars and can rise to 1,500 euros if the vehicle is caught on the road. On top of these fines, police have the power to impound the vehicle, leaving the owner responsible for additional towing and storage fees.
These regulations exist to ensure that any damage caused by a vehicle is covered. With heavy traffic expected this weekend, the DGT is reminding everyone to double-check their documentation. Staying prepared is the best way to avoid unnecessary trouble and ensure a smooth start to your summer break.
