DGT Launches Major Traffic Operation for 2026 Solar Eclipse
Spain's Directorate-General for Traffic has launched a major safety operation for the August 12, 2026, solar eclipse, warning drivers that stopping on roadsides or using mobile devices to photograph the event will result in heavy fines.
The solar eclipse on August 12, 2026, coincides with the peak of the summer holiday season, prompting the Directorate-General for Traffic (DGT) to launch an unprecedented safety operation. Because this rare astronomical event—the first of its kind in the country in over a century—aligns with the August 15 long weekend, officials expect record-breaking traffic as travelers head to vacation spots.
The DGT has identified Aragon, Asturias, Castilla-La Mancha, Castilla y León, La Rioja, the Balearic Islands, and the Valencian Community as areas likely to face the heaviest congestion. To prevent gridlock and accidents caused by driver distraction, the agency is urging strict adherence to traffic laws.
Authorities will be focusing on two specific risks:
- Stopping on road shoulders: Parking on the side of high-capacity roads is prohibited unless there is a genuine emergency. Anyone stopping to view the eclipse will face a 200-euro fine. If the Civil Guard determines the stop endangers other drivers, that fine could increase to 500 euros.
- Using mobile devices: Capturing images of the eclipse while driving is a serious offense. It carries a 200-euro fine and the loss of six points from your license. This rule applies even if you are stopped at a traffic light or stuck in gridlock.
The DGT advises travelers to plan their journeys in advance, check road conditions before leaving, and use designated viewing areas rather than improvising on the roadside. The agency emphasizes that road safety is a shared responsibility, and careful planning is essential to ensure this rare event does not lead to a spike in accidents.
