The Directorate-General for Traffic (DGT) is reminding drivers that parking in front of garage entrances is a serious violation. Even a brief stop in a reserved driveway can lead to significant penalties, as these areas are strictly protected to ensure traffic flow and safety.
Under Article 91.2 of the General Traffic Regulations, blocking an entrance or exit for people or vehicles is an offense. The DGT emphasizes that driveway signs are not merely suggestions; they are official space reservations. Violating these rules can result in a 200-euro fine—which can be halved if paid early—and the vehicle may be towed if it is deemed an obstruction.
This rule applies to everyone, including property owners who park their own vehicles incorrectly. The DGT also notes that local authorities are responsible for managing and maintaining these signs within their municipalities.
Authorities have also warned against the fraudulent use of driveway signs. Installing unauthorized or fake signage is a much more serious offense, with fines ranging from 501 to 901 euros depending on local bylaws. To avoid these penalties and ensure smooth traffic, the DGT urges all drivers to respect all road signs and parking reservations.
