The DGT is warning drivers that failing to obey the R-1 "yield" sign carries a 200-euro fine and four license points, emphasizing that careful observation is essential to prevent accidents and legal liability.

Road safety relies heavily on understanding road signs, a point the Directorate-General for Traffic (DGT) is currently emphasizing. The agency warns that ignoring or misinterpreting the R-1 "yield" sign is a major safety risk that can also lead to serious legal consequences.

According to traffic regulations, a yield sign requires drivers to give priority to vehicles already on the road or in the lane they intend to enter. Unlike a stop sign, you do not need to come to a complete halt if the way is clear. However, this does not mean you can simply drive through; you must slow down and carefully check your surroundings before proceeding.

The DGT stresses that drivers must be especially cautious around vulnerable road users, such as cyclists, motorcyclists, and those on personal mobility devices, who can be harder to spot at intersections. You should only move forward if there is enough space to enter safely without forcing other drivers or riders to change their speed or direction.

Failing to yield is a serious offense. It carries a 200-euro fine and the loss of 4 points from your driver’s license. Beyond these penalties, causing an accident by failing to yield can lead to civil or criminal liability, depending on the severity of the incident. The yield sign—an inverted triangle with a red border—is essential for keeping roads safe, and using caution and anticipation is the best way to prevent accidents.
