DGT Issues Warning on Strict Legal Limits for Reversing Maneuvers

The Spanish General Directorate of Traffic (DGT) has issued a reminder that illegal reversing maneuvers can result in fines of up to 500 euros and points deductions, as the action is strictly limited to specific circumstances and prohibited on highways.

The General Directorate of Traffic (DGT) is reminding drivers that reversing is a strictly regulated maneuver. While it is a common action, it is not something drivers can do whenever they choose; it is only permitted in specific situations.

According to Article 32 of the General Traffic Regulations, you may only reverse to park, merge into traffic, or when you are unable to move forward or turn around. Even then, the law sets two strict limits: you cannot reverse for more than 15 meters, and you are never allowed to enter an intersection while doing so. Additionally, reversing is completely banned on highways and dual carriageways.

The DGT enforces these rules to keep road users safe. If you reverse illegally, you face a 200-euro fine and the loss of 4 points from your license. If authorities determine that your actions put others at risk or involved driving against the flow of traffic, the fine can increase to 500 euros.

Beyond the legal requirements, the DGT stresses the importance of technique. Drivers should always reverse at a slow, controlled speed, use their signals, and constantly check their rearview mirrors. By staying alert and aware of blind spots, drivers can significantly reduce the risk of accidents during these low-speed maneuvers.
