DGT Issues Warning on Driving License Requirements Ahead of May Long Weekend

Spanish traffic authorities are urging drivers to ensure their licenses and vehicle documentation are valid before the May long weekend to avoid fines ranging from 100 to 200 euros.

With the May long weekend approaching, traffic authorities are reminding drivers to ensure their paperwork is in order before hitting the road. The Directorate-General for Traffic (DGT) and the Civil Guard emphasize that carrying valid proof of your right to drive is a legal requirement, and failing to do so can lead to significant fines.

You can present your driving license either as a physical card or digitally through the official miDGT app. If you are stopped by police and cannot produce a valid license, you face a 100-euro fine for a minor offense. If your license has expired, the situation is considered a serious offense, resulting in a 200-euro fine. While this does not result in the loss of license points, the fine remains the same regardless of how long the document has been expired.

To avoid these issues, you can renew your license up to 90 days before it expires. Once you begin the renewal process, you will receive a temporary permit valid for three months, allowing you to continue driving legally while your new license is processed.

Authorities also stress that road safety depends on the condition of your vehicle. Experts recommend performing a mechanical check and verifying that all your vehicle documents are up to date before traveling. This is especially important for those driving on the islands, where high traffic volume and specific road conditions make following these rules essential for a safe and smooth journey.
