DGT Issues Urgent Safety Warnings as Heatwave Hits Tenerife and Summer Travel Begins
As Tenerife faces a 40°C heatwave, the DGT has issued urgent safety guidelines for summer travelers, emphasizing the risks of heat-related fatigue and the importance of vehicle maintenance and hydration.
Tenerife is currently experiencing a heatwave with temperatures nearing 40°C. With the 2026 Special Summer Operation beginning, the General Directorate of Traffic (DGT) has issued urgent safety warnings. Officials note that weather is a major factor in road safety, especially with 104 million long-distance trips expected across the country this July and August.
Extreme heat inside a car does more than just cause discomfort; it affects a driver’s focus and reaction times, increasing the risk of fatigue and drowsiness. To stay safe, the DGT advises planning trips during cooler times of the day to avoid peak sun. Before setting off, ventilate your vehicle by opening the windows to clear out trapped hot air—many modern cars allow you to do this remotely using your key fob.
Once you are driving, the DGT recommends keeping the cabin temperature between 22°C and 24°C. Avoid pointing air vents directly at your body, and drink water regularly to stay hydrated and alert, even if you don’t feel thirsty. Remember that traffic laws require you to wear appropriate clothing and footwear that allow for full freedom of movement; failing to do so can result in a fine.
When taking mandatory breaks—recommended every two hours or every 200 kilometers—always park in the shade. Never leave children, vulnerable people, or pets inside a parked car. Temperatures can reach lethal levels within minutes due to the greenhouse effect. Finally, ensure your vehicle is well-maintained, as extreme heat can put significant strain on your engine and affect your car's reliability during long summer journeys.
