Spain's Directorate-General for Traffic is reminding drivers that reversing is strictly regulated and permitted only as a last resort, with violations punishable by fines of up to 500 euros and license point deductions.

The Directorate-General for Traffic (DGT) is reminding drivers that reversing is a strictly regulated maneuver. It is not a choice to be made at will, but a movement that should only be used when absolutely necessary.

According to Article 32 of the General Traffic Regulations, reversing should always be a last resort. You are only permitted to reverse when parking, merging into traffic, or if you are unable to move forward or turn around. Even then, there are two strict rules: you cannot reverse more than 15 meters, and you are strictly forbidden from entering intersections or driving in the wrong direction on motorways and dual carriageways.

Traffic authorities are cracking down on these maneuvers due to the high risk of accidents caused by poor visibility and limited control. If you break these rules, you face a standard fine of 200 euros and the loss of 4 license points. If the maneuver is deemed negligent and puts others at risk, the fine can increase to 500 euros, along with additional point deductions.

Beyond avoiding fines, the DGT stresses the importance of safety. Drivers should always reverse at a slow speed, signal their intentions clearly, and constantly check their mirrors. Following these guidelines is essential to preventing collisions and keeping both drivers and pedestrians safe in today’s busy traffic environment.
