DGT and Civil Guard Step Up Tunnel Surveillance with Stricter Overtaking Penalties
The Civil Guard and the DGT have intensified surveillance in tunnels and underpasses to enforce strict overtaking regulations and improve road safety.
The Civil Guard and the Directorate-General for Traffic (DGT) are stepping up surveillance in tunnels and underpasses to improve road safety. These stricter controls are part of a preventive strategy designed to reduce accidents in environments where visibility and space are limited.
Under Article 87 of the General Traffic Regulations, overtaking is strictly prohibited in tunnels and underpasses that have only one lane in each direction. This rule is in place to prevent high-risk situations, as the confined space leaves little room for error. Overtaking is only permitted in tunnels with multiple lanes in the same direction, provided the driver does not cross into the opposite lane and has full visibility.
Violating these rules is considered a serious offense. Drivers caught overtaking illegally face a €600 fine and the loss of 6 points from their license, particularly if the maneuver puts other road users at risk.
Beyond the penalties, authorities are urging drivers to follow safe driving habits. Before entering a tunnel, drivers should maintain a safe distance from the vehicle in front and adhere to the speed limit, which is typically 80 km/h. Additionally, any lane changes must be signaled well in advance. These rules apply to both cars and motorcycles and are essential for keeping traffic moving safely in areas where human error is the leading cause of serious accidents.
