Design Contract Awarded for Tenerife’s Hospital del Sur Expansion
A joint venture between Planho Consultores and HS Architects has been selected to design the 40-million-euro expansion of Tenerife’s Hospital del Sur, a project set to double the facility's capacity by 2029.
Plans to expand the Hospital del Sur in Tenerife have reached a major milestone. According to the Public Sector Contracting Platform, a joint venture between Planho Consultores SLP and HS Architects and Partners SLP has been selected to design the first phase of the project. Their bid of 567,000 euros was chosen from eleven entries, coming in well under the initial one-million-euro budget.
The selection process involved a thorough review. Because the winning bid was significantly lower than others, officials conducted a feasibility analysis to ensure the proposal was realistic. After receiving further details from the firms, the contracting authority confirmed the bid was sound.
Once the contract is finalized, the architects will have ten months to complete the design. This progress is a welcome development for local advocacy groups, such as the Pro Public Hospital Platform of the South and Southwest of Tenerife, which have long campaigned against delays in the expansion.
The total project is estimated to cost 40 million euros and is considered vital for the Canary Islands' healthcare system. The regional government has set aside 14 million euros for next year to begin construction, aiming to finish the work by 2029. The expansion is designed to double the hospital's capacity from 150 to 300 beds.
The Ministry of Health’s roadmap includes adding new Critical Care and Hemodynamics units, a new hospitalization wing, and a complete overhaul of the surgical block, Emergency Department, and outpatient clinics. Located in El Mojón (Arona), the project aims to reduce the need to send patients to other hospitals and better serve the growing population in the south of the island.
