Demolition of Abandoned Tenerife Tour Hotel Begins in Candelaria
The demolition of the long-abandoned Tenerife Tour hotel in Candelaria has commenced, clearing the way for a major urban redevelopment project that will feature new housing, retail space, and expanded public coastal access.
The demolition of the Tenerife Tour hotel in Candelaria marks the end of an era for tourism in the Canary Islands, as the site prepares for a major urban redevelopment. According to local reports, the owner, Tenerife Tour S.L., has begun the process of tearing down the complex, which has sat empty for more than ten years.
The demolition is expected to take three months and follows a council order issued last September. Local authorities deemed the building a safety hazard due to its severe structural decay. To allow heavy machinery to operate safely, traffic has been restricted along the nearby seaside avenue, and crews have begun dismantling the building from the top down.
Led by the firm SLP, the project will transform the 8,300-square-meter plot into a mixed-use space featuring a new supermarket and private housing.
The redevelopment also includes a significant benefit for the public: the developers will hand over nearly 1,500 square meters of land for community improvements. This will allow for the expansion of the coastal promenade, the creation of a new plaza with a viewpoint, and better access to the shoreline. By opening up an area that was previously blocked by private construction, the project not only removes a dangerous eyesore but also reconnects the town with its seafront. This marks a final shift away from the area’s 1960s-era bungalow design, moving toward a more modern, integrated urban layout.
