The President of Tenerife called Israel's actions in Gaza a genocide, urging not to associate this with the holding of the "Vuelta a España" on the island and emphasizing the Spanish government's arms purchases from Israel.

The President of the Cabildo of Tenerife, Rosa Dávila, called Israel's actions in Gaza a "horrific massacre" and "genocide." At the same time, she asked not to associate this with the possible holding of the "Vuelta a España" on the island in 2026.

"We'll see what happens in a year," she said in an interview with "Radio Club Tenerife," adding that it is necessary to "condemn" what is happening in Gaza, and it cannot be "ignored."

The President of Tenerife recalled that the Cabildo, together with the Cabildo of Gran Canaria and the local government, has been working for more than a year to ensure that the stages of the "Vuelta" take place in the Canary Islands. Now, according to her, it is necessary to wait for the decisions of international organizations regarding sports events, such as world championships, the Olympics, or the EuroLeague in basketball.

Dávila emphasized that she will not "tire of condemning" the situation in Gaza and the "responsibility of the Israeli government." She believes that it is important to use "any opportunity" to talk about it, "as if nothing is happening."

She also noted that "the actions of the Israeli government cannot be justified." At the same time, she added that it is necessary to "be consistent," because the central government of Spain, headed by Pedro Sánchez, "bought the most weapons from Israel" – 46 contracts worth 1,044 million euros since the beginning of the conflict. And this year, the volume of purchases already exceeds the figures for the entire 2024.
