The opposition to the expansion of the port of Los Cristianos has received support from institutions. Recently, representatives of the Platform against the Expansion of the Port of Los Cristianos (they wear red caps) met with the President of the Cabildo of La Gomera, Casimiro Curbelo, at the island corporation's office.
Although they initially had different views, both sides agreed on the need to work together to address the problems affecting the port and the town of Los Cristianos, particularly traffic and connection to the TF-1 highway. The Platform and the Cabildo of La Gomera agreed to cooperate to find effective solutions without the need to expand the port.
One of the key agreements was to remove cargo from the city port as a priority measure to ease traffic in Los Cristianos and improve port operations.
"We are starting to coordinate steps and make decisions that we support from the platform. These are simple but smart solutions," said Jorge Bello, stressing that removing cargo is key to relieving the city of logistical pressure.
Casimiro Curbelo also reiterated his opposition to the port expansion and expressed respect for the platform's work, pointing out the need to demand more from the competent authorities.
He announced a forthcoming meeting with the Government of the Canary Islands, which will include all stakeholders to advance the redesign of the port.
It was also reported that the winner of the tender for the modernization of the port will be announced soon, in which the local council of Arona and the platform will have the opportunity to make their proposals. The port administration has stated that it will take into account the opinion of the residents of Los Cristianos for a better integration of the port into the city.
"It is important that the port is accessible to the city, and for this, citizens must have their say in this process," Bello stressed.
One of the ideas that the platform will convey to the port administration is the dismantling of the current port building and its relocation.
