The Canary Islands government has awarded a contract to Ferrovial Construcción and ASTOYA to expand the TF-5 highway with a third lane and redesigned junctions to alleviate chronic traffic congestion near Tenerife North Airport.

Efforts to ease traffic on the TF-5—one of Spain’s busiest roads—have taken a major step forward. The regional Ministry of Public Works, Housing and Mobility has awarded a provisional contract to a joint venture between Ferrovial Construcción and ASTOYA to build a third lane between Guamasa and Tenerife North Airport, heading toward the capital.

This project is more than just a road widening; it is a complete redesign of how traffic moves through the metropolitan area. The plan includes a major overhaul of the Guamasa and San Lázaro junctions, where traffic heading to the airport often creates significant bottlenecks. By separating vehicle paths, the new layout will allow drivers coming from the north to reach the airport directly, removing the need for the merging maneuvers that currently cause delays during rush hour.

This section of the road is a critical bottleneck that affects both the daily lives of residents and the efficiency of local logistics. By increasing the road's capacity, the regional government hopes to better manage the heavy commuter traffic typical of Tenerife’s metropolitan area. With the contract now awarded, the project moves into its final planning stage before construction begins. Once finished, the work is expected to significantly improve traffic flow toward both Santa Cruz and the airport.
