Construction has resumed on a 300,000-euro youth hostel project in La Zarza, Fasnia, aimed at boosting local tourism and economic activity by repurposing a former school building.

Construction has resumed on the youth hostel in La Zarza, Fasnia, marking a significant step forward for local infrastructure. The project, designed to boost the economy in the municipality’s mid-altitude areas, was previously stalled when the original contractor withdrew—a common issue in Spain recently due to rising material costs and inflation.

Mayor Luis Javier González and the local council have successfully re-tendered the remaining work, valued at over 150,000 euros. With a total investment of nearly 300,000 euros, the council prioritized a quick bidding process to ensure this strategic site for educational tourism and youth activities is finally completed.

The project creatively repurposes the semi-basement of the former Old School Museum, a space that had long sat empty. The new facility is spread across three levels: a reception area connected to the museum, a camping zone with a viewpoint and barbecue facilities overlooking the Las Gambuesas ravine, and the hostel itself. The hostel includes a main dormitory for eight guests, a kitchen-dining area, and accessible restrooms.

In addition to the hostel, the site will feature a public bar. By combining tourist accommodation with local services, the council aims to create a hub of economic activity that helps reduce the isolation of the area’s higher communities and turns an underused building into a valuable local asset.
