Construction has officially begun on Candelaria’s new 8.8-million-euro municipal indoor swimming pool, a long-awaited facility expected to be completed within two years.

Construction has officially begun on Candelaria’s new municipal indoor swimming pool, marking a major milestone in the town’s urban and sports development. The local council confirmed that the project has cleared all necessary site certifications, and work is expected to take two years to complete.

The project represents a total public investment of over 8.8 million euros. This includes 8.5 million euros for the facility itself, plus an additional 350,000 euros dedicated to improving access roads, landscaping the surrounding area, and installing specialized sports equipment.

Located near the Punta Larga pavilion, the pool’s construction brings an end to years of administrative delays. First proposed in 2014, the project stalled in 2018 when the tender was declared void due to legal concerns. It wasn't until 2023 that the current government, led by Mayor Mari Brito, successfully revived the plans for the 3,210-square-meter site.

The new facility is designed to be highly versatile. It will feature a main 25-meter pool, a smaller teaching pool, changing rooms, a gym, and rooms for guided fitness classes. To address the loss of street-level parking, the complex will also include an underground garage with space for 63 vehicles.

Mayor Brito acknowledged that the construction will cause some disruption to local traffic and parking. The City Council has been planning alternative routes for several months to minimize the impact on residents and has asked for the public’s patience during the building process. Once finished, the center aims to modernize the town’s sports facilities by combining health, leisure, and aquatic training in one central location.
