ConCierto Paliqueo Returns to Santa Cruz de Tenerife to Explore Music and Stillness
The Canary Islands Government is hosting the ConCierto Paliqueo series in Santa Cruz de Tenerife this Sunday, featuring performances by Cristina Mahelo and Gara Alemán in an interactive format that encourages dialogue between artists and the audience.
The Canary Islands Government is bringing its intimate ConCierto Paliqueo series back to Santa Cruz de Tenerife this Sunday at 7:00 p.m. Moving beyond a traditional concert, the event encourages an open dialogue between performers and the audience, who can interact in real time using their mobile devices.
The evening will feature two rising stars of the local music scene: Cristina Mahelo and Gara Alemán. Mahelo, a multidisciplinary artist from Tenerife, will perform pieces from her project En tiempos de magua. Produced by Belén A. Doreste, the work explores Canarian identity by blending folk traditions with contemporary sounds. Joining her is Gara Alemán, a performer from Fuerteventura who combines her formal musical training with pop influences and a deep connection to her island’s heritage.
Hosted by Rubén Rodríguez and featuring the 101 Brass Band, the event will explore the importance of silence and stillness in a world dominated by constant digital noise. The conversation and the music will focus on what is often overlooked by mainstream, high-rotation commercial trends.
By inviting the audience to sit both in the stalls and directly on stage with the performers, ConCierto Paliqueo creates a space for reflection. It serves as a form of cultural resistance, challenging the pressure to constantly produce content for streaming platforms. Ultimately, the program highlights the value of the "pause" as a creative tool, offering a thoughtful critique of how we produce and consume music in the Canary Islands today.
