The eco-socialist group Sí se puede is calling for urgent management reforms in Tacoronte after reporting that the protected Costa de Acentejo landscape is being degraded by unauthorized private events.

The management of protected natural areas in the Canary Islands is under scrutiny again following concerns raised by the eco-socialist group Sí se puede in Tacoronte. The group reports that the "Mirador de los 500 escalones" (500 Steps Viewpoint)—part of the Costa de Acentejo Protected Landscape—is being used for private events, threatening the area's ecological health.

Municipal spokesperson José Almenara pointed out a gap between the site’s legal protection and its daily reality. Despite perimeter fencing, the area is frequently used for weddings and private parties. According to the complaint, these events take place without oversight, leading to littering on the hillside and coast, as well as noise and traffic disturbances in a zone that should have strict access restrictions.

This issue highlights a broader struggle for local authorities: monitoring and penalizing the misuse of protected landscapes. The group has shared footage online showing individuals bypassing barriers to access the site, proving that current surveillance is ineffective. In response, the eco-socialists are calling on the Tacoronte City Council and the Island Council (Cabildo) to work together on a coordinated management plan.

Their proposal includes stricter enforcement, fines for environmental violations, potential fees for using public spaces, and active monitoring to prevent permanent damage to the ecosystem. The group warns that without a clear policy, the lack of oversight will continue to compromise the biodiversity and stability of this protected environment.
