Composer José H. Toledo Wins 8th Ateneo de La Laguna International Music Competition
La Palma-born composer José H. Toledo has won the 8th Ateneo de La Laguna International Music Composition Competition with his piece Triptychos… de los estados de consciencia, which is set to premiere on September 17 at the Teatro Leal.
The Canary Islands’ music scene is currently enjoying a surge of creativity, with La Palma-born composer José H. Toledo at the forefront. Toledo recently won first prize in the 8th Ateneo de La Laguna International Music Composition Competition for his piece Triptychos… de los estados de consciencia, written for oboe, cello, and piano.
The jury—led by Rubens Askenar and including Dori Díaz Jerez, Enrique Álvarez, Miguel Jaubert, and Laura Gordo—selected Toledo’s work, further cementing his reputation in contemporary music. The winning piece will premiere on September 17 at the Teatro Leal in La Laguna, joining a prestigious list of past winners that includes Alberto Olmo López and Marcos Fernández-Barrero.
Toledo, who has lived in Tenerife for 30 years, balances his career as a composer with his role as an educator at the Professional Conservatory of Music of Santa Cruz de Tenerife and the Higher Conservatory of Music of the Canary Islands, where he has taught since 1996. His work, often highlighted by organizations like Cosimte and Promuscan, frequently explores themes tied to the identity and heritage of the Canary Islands.
His recent success is part of a growing list of accolades. In 2026, he placed third in both the Tenerife Federation of Music Bands competition and the Abilio Alonso Otazo contest in Candelaria. These follow a successful 2025, which saw him earn recognition in Catalonia and across various chamber and symphonic categories in Tenerife. Toledo’s versatility is notable; he moves easily between chamber music and large-scale orchestral arrangements, even collaborating on high-profile projects like the symphonic arrangements for artist Abraham Mateo, which aired on RTVE last Christmas.
Today, Toledo remains highly active, juggling new compositions with commissioned arrangements. His recent work with the Ensemble Difracción highlights his ongoing commitment to blending symphonic tradition with modern storytelling, confirming his status as one of the islands' most consistent and influential voices in contemporary music.
