A 41-year-old climber has died after falling into a ravine in Candelaria, Tenerife. The incident, which occurred in the rugged mid-altitude terrain of the island, has once again highlighted the dangers associated with extreme sports in the region.

Emergency services were first alerted on Saturday afternoon after the climber became stranded in the Cuevas de Igonse area of Araya, unable to move up or down.

Rescue efforts were hampered by the difficult terrain and the onset of darkness. After firefighters and the Civil Guard arrived, it was discovered that the climber had fallen into a location inaccessible by foot. Due to the dangerous conditions, the recovery operation was postponed until Sunday morning to ensure the safety of the rescue teams.

Using drones to pinpoint the location, members of the Emergency and Rescue Group (GES) and the Civil Guard were able to reach the climber on Sunday, where they confirmed he had passed away.

This tragedy serves as a reminder of the risks involved in climbing Tenerife’s ravines. The island’s challenging geology and unpredictable conditions mean that even minor incidents can quickly escalate into life-threatening emergencies, requiring highly specialized coordination between police, firefighters, and aerial rescue teams.
