Civil Guard Warns: Use V16 Beacon AND Hazard Lights

Source: El Día

The Civil Guard warns drivers to use both hazard lights and the new mandatory V16 emergency beacon simultaneously, as forgetting hazard lights is a dangerous and common mistake.

The Civil Guard is warning drivers about a common mistake since the new V16 emergency beacon became mandatory on January 1st. Many drivers are using the beacon but forgetting to turn on their hazard lights. This oversight is dangerous and could lead to accidents.

Authorities want to remind everyone that the new V16 beacon doesn't replace hazard lights; both must be used together to properly warn other drivers. If your vehicle breaks down, is involved in an accident, or stops for any reason, you must activate your hazard lights and use the V16 beacon.

Hazard lights are still the main way to visually alert drivers, especially when it's hard to see or traffic is heavy. It's crucial to use both emergency tools because the V16 beacon alone might not give other drivers enough time to react.

The Directorate-General for Traffic (DGT) advises keeping the V16 beacon somewhere easy to reach, like the glove compartment or a side pocket. This way, you can quickly grab it and place it on the highest part of your stopped vehicle, such as the roof, for maximum visibility.

Failing to carry an approved V16 beacon, or using one that isn't approved, can result in an 80 euro fine.

Traffic authorities also point out that hazard lights have a specific purpose, and using them incorrectly can lead to penalties. For instance, using them to justify stopping illegally, parking in a double line, or during traffic jams when your vehicle isn't actually broken down can result in fines between 80 and 200 euros.

Similarly, not turning on your hazard lights when your vehicle is stopped on the road, or failing to signal a sudden brake that creates a danger for other traffic, can also lead to fines of up to 200 euros.

The key to staying safe is to always use both the V16 beacon and your hazard lights. This ensures your vehicle is properly marked, protecting both you and everyone else on the road.
