Civil Guard Warns Drivers of Dangers Posed by Loose School Supplies
The Civil Guard and DGT have issued a warning to drivers to secure all school supplies in the trunk, cautioning that loose items can become dangerous projectiles during a collision.
The return to school means more than just adjusting to new schedules; it also brings a surge in traffic, often leading to a lapse in basic road safety. The Civil Guard has recently issued a warning regarding the transport of school supplies inside vehicles, reminding drivers that all luggage must be properly secured to prevent accidents.
The primary danger is the physics of a collision. The Directorate-General for Traffic (DGT) explains that loose objects inside a moving car gain dangerous momentum during sudden braking or a crash. At just 50 km/h, the weight of a backpack can multiply by up to forty—a phenomenon known as the "elephant effect." This turns a simple bag into a projectile that can cause severe injury. For this reason, authorities strongly advise keeping all bags and satchels in the trunk.
Under Article 14 of the General Traffic Regulations, drivers are legally required to arrange any load so that it does not compromise the car's stability, block the driver’s view, or shift unexpectedly. Failing to follow these rules is considered a road safety hazard and carries a 200-euro fine.
Beyond the risk of a fine, officers emphasize that the rear parcel shelf should remain clear. Filling this space with objects blocks the rearview mirror and drastically reduces visibility. The message from authorities is clear: the car interior should be free of loose items that could interfere with driving or become dangerous in an accident. Ultimately, keeping school supplies properly stowed is a simple but essential step in ensuring the safety of everyone on board.
