Civil Guard Seizes Five Undersized Octopuses in Candelaria
Civil Guard officers in Candelaria seized five illegally caught, undersized octopuses from a person fishing without a license in a prohibited area, issuing four citations for violations of Canary Islands Fishing Law.
Civil Guard officers in Candelaria have seized five octopuses, each weighing less than one kilogram. These octopuses were caught illegally, breaking the Canary Islands Fishing Law.
Because of their small size, the octopuses had not yet reached maturity. This poses a risk to the species' future development.
The person responsible was fishing openly on Punta Larga Beach in Candelaria, in front of many people. They were fishing in an area where it is not allowed and did not have a valid fishing license. Officers issued four citations for administrative violations.
Under the Canary Islands Fishing Law, penalties for such offenses can be minor (a warning or a fine of €60 to €300), serious (a fine of €301 to €60,000), or very serious (a fine of €60,001 to €300,000).
