Civil Guard Issues Warning on Summer Road Safety and Proper Luggage Packing

The Civil Guard is urging drivers to properly secure luggage this summer to prevent dangerous shifting during collisions and avoid potential traffic fines.

Road safety is back in the spotlight this summer as the Civil Guard issues new warnings about how we pack our cars. With more people hitting the road, authorities are reminding drivers that securing luggage properly isn’t just a legal requirement—it is a vital safety measure that could save lives in an accident.

The danger comes down to physics. According to the Directorate-General for Traffic (DGT), any loose object inside a moving car gains massive force during a collision. At just 50 km/h, an item’s weight can multiply by up to forty, turning everyday belongings into dangerous projectiles. This is often called the "elephant effect," where a small object hits passengers with the force of a large animal, highlighting why proper packing is so critical.

Legally, traffic regulations require that all cargo be stowed so it doesn't affect the car’s stability, block the driver's view, or shift during travel. To stay safe, authorities recommend placing heavy items at the bottom of the trunk, pushed firmly against the back of the rear seats. This keeps the car’s center of gravity low and prevents items from sliding.

Ignoring these rules can lead to fines. Failing to secure a load properly can result in a penalty of up to 200 euros, while handling loose objects while driving is considered a distraction and carries an 80-euro fine. Additionally, if your luggage blocks your view through the rearview mirror, the law requires you to have a second exterior mirror on the passenger side.

The bottom line is simple: plan your packing before you leave. A car’s space is limited, so prioritize safety and visibility over bringing extra items. By packing smart, you can avoid unnecessary risks and ensure a safer journey during the busy summer travel season.
