Civil Guard Issues Road Safety Warning as Spring Rains Increase Accident Risk

Spanish traffic authorities are urging drivers to replace worn windshield wipers and check tire pressure to prevent accidents caused by slippery roads and reduced visibility during the first spring rains.

Spring brings a weather hazard that drivers should take seriously. The Civil Guard has issued a warning that the first rains of the season pose a significant risk to road safety. This isn't just about the rain itself; when water mixes with the dust and oil residue that has built up on the road during the dry months, it creates a slippery film that makes it much harder for tires to grip the surface.

The Directorate-General for Traffic (DGT) also highlights that reduced visibility is a major cause of accidents during these rainy periods. Raindrops on the windshield distort light, making it difficult to see road markings and other vehicles, especially at night. This issue becomes even worse if your windshield wipers are worn out. Old blades don't just fail to clean the glass properly; they can also scratch the windshield, further obstructing your view.

Traffic authorities strongly recommend regular maintenance. You should replace your wiper blades at least once a year, or sooner if you notice them making noise, leaving streaks, or failing to clear the glass effectively. Under traffic regulations, drivers are required to maintain a clear field of vision and keep their windshields in good condition at all times.

Driving with faulty wipers can lead to fines ranging from 80 to 200 euros, depending on the severity of the issue. While these fines do not result in points being deducted from your license, the DGT emphasizes that the goal is to prevent accidents. They urge all drivers to check their tire pressure and ensure their visibility systems are working properly before heading out in bad weather.
