Civil Guard Intensifies Fog Light Checks, Fines Up To €200

The Civil Guard has increased patrols across Spain, including the Canary Islands, to ensure drivers correctly use fog lights in poor visibility, with fines ranging from 100 to 200 euros for misuse.

Being able to see clearly is crucial for safe driving. Anything that blocks a driver's view can make roads dangerous. Bad weather like rain or fog means drivers need to be extra careful.

To make roads safer and reduce accidents, the Civil Guard has increased patrols across the Canary Islands and the rest of Spain. Traffic officers are particularly checking that drivers use their fog lights correctly. These lights are very important in winter when fog, rain, or cold weather make it hard to see.

Every car has one or two red rear fog lights. These help other drivers see your car. However, not all cars have front fog lights because they aren't required by law, though newer models often include them.

According to Article 106 of the General Traffic Regulations: Front fog lights should only be used when visibility is poor, or on narrow, winding roads (defined as those 6.50 meters wide or less, with signs showing many curves). Rear fog lights should only be turned on when the weather or environment is very bad, such as in thick fog, very heavy rain, heavy snow, or dense dust or smoke.

The Directorate-General for Traffic (DGT) warns that if you don't use your fog lights when visibility requires it, it's a serious offense and can lead to a 200 euro fine. Conversely, using them when they're not needed is a minor offense, punishable by a 100 euro fine.
