Civil Guard Dismantles Sophisticated Criminal Gang in Tenerife Following 34 Robberies
The Spanish Civil Guard has dismantled a sophisticated criminal gang in Tenerife responsible for 34 violent robberies, resulting in eight arrests and the recovery of stolen property worth over 60,000 euros.
The Civil Guard has dismantled a criminal gang in Tenerife responsible for 34 separate crimes, highlighting the increasingly sophisticated methods used by robbery rings across the islands. The operation, which followed a four-month investigation, resulted in eight arrests and the imprisonment of three key members, bringing relief to local business owners who had been alarmed by a recent wave of robberies.
Investigators noted that the gang operated with a high level of technical planning. They carefully scouted targets—mostly gas stations and restaurants—and used counter-surveillance tactics to avoid detection. To further cover their tracks, the group used stolen or rented vehicles with cloned license plates and relied on "cooling zones," where they would abandon vehicles to break any connection to the crime scenes.
The financial toll of these crimes is substantial. The Civil Guard estimates that the stolen cash, tobacco, and equipment are worth over 60,000 euros, while the structural damage caused to the properties exceeds 100,000 euros. The gang’s violent approach, which involved using bladed weapons, sledgehammers, and tasers to quickly subdue victims during nighttime raids, prompted a major response from the Judicial Police and local units in Puerto de la Cruz and Playa de las Américas.
Officers intercepted the suspects just before they could carry out another robbery in the south of the island, finding them in possession of their usual tools. Subsequent searches of their homes uncovered a variety of items, including jewelry, vehicle keys, imitation weapons, and a Local Police identification badge, all of which are now part of the ongoing court case.
This case underscores the ongoing challenge that organized, hierarchical criminal groups pose to security forces in busy tourist and commercial areas. The coordinated effort between specialized police units successfully neutralized a group that had become one of the most aggressive and active threats to public safety in Tenerife.
