The Spanish Civil Guard has dismantled a criminal network in Tenerife responsible for a 1.3 million euro international luxury car fraud scheme involving the falsification of documents for vehicles stolen across the European Union.
The Civil Guard has dismantled a sophisticated criminal network in southern Tenerife that specialized in international car fraud. Investigators from the Playa de las Américas station uncovered a scheme where luxury vehicles were stolen across the European Union by defaulting on rental and leasing contracts.
The operation caused over 1.3 million euros in losses, highlighting how criminals exploit the Schengen Area’s open borders to move and launder stolen assets. The group’s method involved transporting the vehicles to Spain, where they falsified the original paperwork to register the cars locally. This process was designed to hide the vehicles' history and prevent financial institutions from tracking them down.
During raids in Adeje, police seized 5,800 euros in cash, digital storage devices, and documents detailing the illegal transactions. These items have been handed over to the Arona Court, which is overseeing the case.
This case underscores the difficulties authorities face with international crime and the need for better cross-border cooperation. The Civil Guard’s investigation remains ongoing as they work to identify further accomplices on the island and coordinate with European police forces to recover the remaining missing vehicles. To prevent Spain from becoming a haven for stolen goods, authorities are now focusing on improving real-time information sharing between international security agencies.
