Cisneros La Laguna Faces Uncertain Future Following Superliga Quarterfinal Exit

Cisneros La Laguna’s exit from the Men’s Volleyball Superliga quarterfinals after a loss to Manacor marks the end of a competitive era and the start of a period of uncertainty for the Canary Islands club. Despite the early exit, the club considers its season a success, largely due to securing a spot in European competition for the second time in just three years.

Club management noted that a budget gap played a significant role in their series against Manacor. Although the Tenerife team finished fifth in the regular season—outperforming wealthier clubs like Teruel, Almería, and Valencia—they could not overcome Manacor’s technical edge. The board also pointed to controversial officiating in the second match, specifically missed net violations that they believe shifted the momentum in a decisive set.

This early finish leaves the club facing a long period of inactivity. In response, leadership plans to propose expanding the Superliga from 12 to 14 teams at the next meeting of club presidents, hoping to boost the league’s competitiveness and commercial appeal.

The team now faces a major overhaul. Due to a limited budget, Cisneros often acts as a proving ground for talent, making it difficult to retain key players like José Osado, Hugo, and Víctor Andreu when wealthier clubs come calling. Head coach Miguel is also unlikely to return, as his success this season has raised his international profile.

While the club remains backed by local government support, the board is open to potential changes in venue or branding if it could lead to better infrastructure and financial stability. The immediate focus is on planning for the 2026/27 season, with the goal of moving beyond being a "stepping-stone" team and establishing a permanent, stable presence in national volleyball.
