The legendary arepera Punto Criollo in La Laguna has changed owners, but it will not disappear.
The well-known arepera Punto Criollo is closing in La Laguna, but will continue to operate with a new owner, retaining the name and recipes.
The well-known arepera Punto Criollo is closing in La Laguna. According to the Commercial Registry, the company that managed it decided to liquidate it on August 19.
But don't worry, the beloved place will not disappear! Although the founding family will no longer manage the establishment, it will continue to operate at the same address (El Tison street), with the same name and the same delicious recipes.
The arepera has a new owner - he bought the rights to the brand about seven months ago.
Punto Criollo was opened by Ildefonso Vera Cordero in 1980. He was inspired by his brother, Eugenio Vera Cordero, who founded the arepera Caracas back in 1966 - the first in Spain. Caracas now operates in the Carrefour Añaza shopping center, where it moved from the old Calvo Sotelo street in Santa Cruz.
Ildefonso had been nurturing the idea of his own business for a long time, and in 1997 he founded the company that has now been liquidated.
For more than forty years, Punto Criollo has been a favorite place for many residents of La Laguna.
The Vera family has been linked to Venezuela since 1956. Eugenio emigrated there and worked as a Pepsi distributor. There he married Antonia Linares, who was born in Santa Cruz de Tenerife, and they had two children. In 1965, they returned to the Canary Islands, and a year later they opened the first arepera in the islands.
The family's entrepreneurial spirit has not faded. Antonio's cousin helped open the arepera La Guaira in Taco, and other relatives spread the idea to Santander, opening the first such establishment on the Iberian Peninsula.
Ildefonso Vera ran Arepera Punto Criollo until 2010, after which his daughters took over until the recent sale.
