The Canarian Coalition demands that the company responsible for the Arico Environmental Complex be fined for non-compliance and accuses local authorities of politicizing the issue of waste management.

The Canarian Coalition (CC) in Arico believes that the company responsible for the Island Environmental Complex (CAI) should be fined if it continues to violate the rules.

Víctor García, a representative of the coalition, recalled that at the beginning of the complex's operation, the local authorities acted decisively. He hopes that they will continue to take similar measures if necessary. He is referring to the fact that at the end of 2023, the company managing the landfill, UTE, was delayed in paying 14 million euros due to management problems.

García stressed that for the future of Arico and the normal operation of the Environmental Complex, it is important to fine the company for each breach of contract. In addition, the mayor's office should develop a serious plan with the support of experts and politicians, and establish cooperation with all stakeholders. The deputy said that his team visited the complex and spoke with employees to learn about their problems firsthand. Therefore, the CC has proposed to the local authorities to improve the working conditions of the staff, repair the equipment, and eliminate the shortcomings in the maintenance for which the company is responsible.

The problems of the Environmental Complex require a responsible approach and quick solutions. For example, it is necessary to collect the plastic that is scattered around, develop waste recycling, and improve environmental education on the island.

The Canarian Coalition in Arico is concerned that the local authorities (PSOE and PP parties) are treating the situation with the Environmental Complex with a lack of seriousness and irresponsibility. García believes that they are using this important issue for political purposes. He criticizes them for discussing a proposal to criticize the local authorities at the meeting without prior conclusions, technical or legal reports, off the agenda, and without discussion in previous committees. At the same time, they are demanding measures that are already being taken, considered, or provided for in the contract for the management of the Environmental Complex.

The councilor stressed that simply burying garbage is not a solution to the problem. Víctor García also doubts the effectiveness of the management of services in the city and accuses the PSOE and PP of the fact that Arico suspended the waste collection contract, which led to poor management of local garbage. The nationalists have repeatedly complained about this problem at city council meetings.
