Cartoonist Maikel Named Guest of Honor for La Laguna’s ‘Between Vines and Vignettes’ Event
The city of San Cristóbal de La Laguna is hosting cartoonist Maikel as the guest of honor for its "Between Vines and Vignettes" initiative, a cultural program that celebrates the intersection of graphic storytelling and local winemaking.
This June, San Cristóbal de La Laguna is once again blending wine culture with the world of comics. According to Diario de Avisos, the "Tacoronte-Acentejo Summer Extra" program has chosen cartoonist Maikel as the guest of honor for its "Between Vines and Vignettes" initiative—a unique project that bridges the gap between winemaking and graphic storytelling.
Maikel, known for his wordless graphic humor, will be the focus of several public events. An award-winning artist—having received the Ivá Prize in 2011 and recognition from Diario de Avisos in 2017—Maikel will meet with readers at Librería Lemus. He will also join veteran comic critic Manuel Darias, who brings over 50 years of expertise to the table, for a roundtable discussion.
Maikel’s influence extends far beyond the Canary Islands, thanks to his long career in major Spanish publications. He is perhaps best known for Seguridasosiá, a satirical look at the public healthcare system featuring the character Dr. Muñón, which ran for nearly 1,800 pages in El Jueves. His impressive resume also includes contributions to El Mundo, Sport, and El Periódico de Catalunya, as well as historic magazines like El Papus, Mortadelo, and Hara Kiri.
The collaboration was officially launched by representatives from the La Laguna City Council and the Tacoronte-Acentejo Regulatory Council. The event highlights the city’s commitment to boosting its cultural scene as a World Heritage Site. For the comic industry, this initiative not only honors veteran creators but also showcases how comics can connect with other sectors, cementing the region as a hub for both wine and the arts.
