Carnival Glory Debut Boosts Tenerife’s Status as Major Cruise Hub
The arrival of the Carnival Glory in Santa Cruz de Tenerife underscores the port's growing importance as a major transatlantic hub during a peak period that will see 27,000 passengers visit the city over the Easter holiday.
The arrival of the Carnival Glory at the port of Santa Cruz de Tenerife marks a significant step in the capital's efforts to strengthen its position on major transatlantic shipping routes. According to the Port Authority, the debut of this large cruise ship highlights the island's ability to handle major maritime traffic, a sector that provides a vital boost to the local economy and service industry during peak tourist seasons.
The ship’s arrival, which included a traditional plaque exchange with Captain Nicola Laccarino, comes during a busy Holy Week for the Canary Islands. Between March 31 and Easter Sunday, the ports of Tenerife, La Palma, and La Gomera are scheduled to host 22 cruise calls. Half of these will dock in Santa Cruz, where an estimated 27,000 passengers are expected to arrive, putting the city’s logistics and visitor management to the test.
The Carnival Glory is a typical modern cruise ship, measuring 290 meters in length and weighing 110,000 gross tons. It can carry 2,980 passengers and a crew of 1,150 across its 13 decks and 1,490 cabins. With a top speed of 21 knots, the vessel is designed for efficient travel on international itineraries.
Beyond its technical specifications, the ship offers a wide range of amenities for travelers, including three outdoor swimming pools, fitness centers, running tracks, and dedicated areas for different age groups. The cabins are designed for comfort and safety, reflecting the high standards cruise lines must meet today, as the onboard experience has become just as important to passengers as the destinations themselves.
