The capital’s taxi industry is launching a unified digital platform this November to modernize services, enhance safety, and improve competitiveness against ride-hailing apps.

The taxi industry in the capital is undergoing a major digital transformation. According to local reports, a new unified platform is being developed to centralize demand and streamline daily operations. This project is a joint effort between the Élite and La Gremial taxi associations, the technology consultancy Atlantis, and the local government. The goal is to standardize access to taxis through a mobile app, a website, and an instant messaging service.

A trial period for this new system will begin this November, with the aim of being fully operational by January 2027. The platform will be free for both taxi drivers and passengers. Beyond booking rides, the system will help manage the industry by monitoring fleets in real time, organizing shifts, and tracking passenger demand at taxi stands. Safety is also a top priority, with a built-in alert system for emergencies.

This initiative is part of a broader trend among major Spanish cities to help traditional taxis compete with ride-hailing services (VTCs), which have dominated the digital market for the past decade. By creating a shared, public tool, the industry hopes to improve the user experience and provide a unified technological response to replace the fragmented solutions used today. This move is a significant step toward modernizing urban transport and meeting the public’s demand for faster, more transparent, and sustainable mobility.
