In Candelaria, deputies approved a 72% increase in garbage collection fees by 2026, citing European requirements and promising benefits for the poor and those who sort waste.

In the city of Candelaria, deputies voted yesterday for new rules regarding payment for garbage disposal. The decision was supported by the PSOE, CC, and Vox parties (14 votes in favor). This costs the city over 2.4 million euros.

According to the new rules, the fee for garbage disposal for regular apartments and houses will increase. Currently, it is 71.4 euros, but in 2026 it will be 122.8 euros. This means that people will have to pay 50 euros more per year, or 72% more than now.

The city authorities say that this is necessary to comply with European requirements. They require that people pay for garbage disposal as much as it actually costs. Airam Pérez, who is responsible for finance in Candelaria, explained that the new rules will not only help cover costs, but also provide benefits to those who need it, and discounts to those who sort garbage.

He also added that Candelaria already has a new contract for garbage disposal and recycling, and this is already improving the situation in the city. New garbage trucks and larger containers will appear in the near future to make garbage disposal more convenient.

A city council representative emphasized that the main rule is "the more you litter, the more you pay." He urged residents to treat garbage responsibly in order to reduce the cost of its disposal and, accordingly, pay less.

Those who find themselves in a difficult financial situation are promised a 63% discount. And those who sort garbage can receive discounts: 25% for composting at home, 25% for sorting organic waste, and up to 25% more for properly disposing of large items, such as old furniture.
