In Candelaria, after more than a decade of legal battles, the construction of a covered pool costing 7.1 million euros will finally begin, with the tender documents having been approved by the city council.

In Candelaria, the construction of an indoor pool, which has been "stalled" for more than 10 years due to litigation, will finally begin.

Today, at a meeting of the City Council, deputies are expected to finally approve the documents for the start of the tender for construction work. The total budget of the project is 7,125,505 euros.

The complex will have two swimming pools: one multifunctional and the other for training. There will also be a gym, changing rooms, parking for 59 cars, and outdoor recreation areas. On the top floor, there will be a hall for strength and cardio training, as well as rooms for various activities.

The pool will be built opposite the CEIP Punta Larga school, at the beginning of Los Menceyes Boulevard. The money for the construction is already available. In August, 3,330,497 euros were allocated, which were added to the amount approved last year.

The matter has moved off the dime after many unsuccessful attempts. In 2015, a company won the contract to build the facility in 20 months for 6,015,000 euros. But it all ended in court because the project did not meet building standards.

It turned out that the project included a shopping center of 1,800 square meters. This contradicted the development plan, where this land was intended only for sports facilities.

The contracting company claimed that it was unaware of these discrepancies because the City Council had provided positive technical opinions.

In 2017, the High Court of Justice of the Canary Islands overturned the tender. Recently, the court ordered the City Council to pay the contracting company 216,000 euros in compensation plus interest. In addition, in 2018, the tender was declared invalid.

The City Council meeting will also discuss changes to the payment schedule for the Auditorium project. This is necessary to agree on an agreement with the Tenerife Island Council, which is funding the project. Culture Councilor José Carlos Acha explained that the changes involve "transferring payments to 2029."
