Candelaria Launches €1.4 Million Traffic Overhaul in Barranco Hondo

Candelaria’s city council has launched a major traffic overhaul in the center of Barranco Hondo to improve local mobility. Developed in partnership with the local Community Board, these changes aim to resolve long-standing issues with traffic flow and a lack of parking in the area’s challenging, hilly terrain.

The main change involves Calle Romano, which is shifting to a one-way system heading uphill. This decision allows the town to keep existing parking spaces, which would have been impossible to maintain under safety regulations if two-way traffic continued. Additionally, heavy-duty vehicles and public transport are now banned from this section to prevent accidents on the road's sharp bends.

The project is backed by a €1.4 million investment from the municipal budget, with the tender process set to begin in the coming weeks. The plan extends beyond Calle Romano; starting this Wednesday, a similar one-way system will be introduced on Calle Alcalde Antonio Hernández Marrero, between San José and Llano de la Rosa. By switching this stretch to one-way traffic, the council expects to create about 20 new parking spaces, addressing a frequent request from local residents.

These updates reflect a broader trend across the Canary Islands, where municipalities are working to adapt older infrastructure to handle a significant increase in vehicle numbers. By moving to one-way streets, planners hope to balance the need for parking and traffic flow with the safety of pedestrians in established residential neighborhoods.
