Candelaria City Council has increased the budget for a new sports and social complex at Playa La Viuda to 1.12 million euros to account for rising construction costs and attract new bidders.

Candelaria City Council has launched a new tender for a sports and social complex at Playa La Viuda, highlighting the challenges local governments face when managing public works in today’s economy. The project’s budget has been increased to 1,124,783 euros—over 300,000 euros more than originally planned.

This price hike is necessary to keep up with the rising costs of construction materials and labor. Adjusting budgets has become essential to ensure projects actually attract bidders, a recurring issue for many municipalities in southern Tenerife. After a failed attempt to tender the project last year, the council hopes this more competitive budget will successfully secure a construction firm.

The new facility will be built at the corner of San Juanito and Berta Gámez streets, replacing the existing sports court. The 1,782-square-meter site will feature a multipurpose room, storage, and restrooms, alongside a new sports court, children’s play area, recreational space for adults, and landscaped gardens.

Mayor Mari Brito confirmed that the project will be fully funded by the council using municipal budget surpluses. Once a contractor is selected and the deal is signed, the company will have 18 months to complete the work. The facility is expected to be a major boost for the area, providing a much-needed space for both sports and community activities.
