Candelaria Hosts Week-Long Cultural Celebrations Honoring Patron Saint
The town of Candelaria is hosting a week-long series of concerts and cultural events to celebrate the Canary Islands' Patron Saint ahead of the main festivities on August 15.
Candelaria, Tenerife, has become the cultural heart of the Canary Islands this week, hosting a packed schedule of events to honor the islands' Patron Saint. Thousands of spectators have gathered at the venue near the town hall, highlighting just how important these summer celebrations are to the local community.
The festivities kicked off with a special concert marking the 50th anniversary of the Las Candelas Music Band. Led by Mauro Fariña Alonso, the band performed alongside violinist Ara Malikian for a crowd of roughly 4,000 people. The show included tributes to the island of El Hierro, which is the focus of this year’s celebrations. The event was the result of months of careful planning, overseen by Humberto Armas.
The musical lineup continued with the Quijano brothers, who brought their Miami 1990 Tour to the town, supported by the band Escuela de Calor and DJ Jorge García. On Sunday, the group Los Cantadores celebrated their 18th anniversary with a performance of traditional Canarian music, featuring a guest appearance by singer Falete.
The celebrations are set to continue throughout the week. On Tuesday, August 11, artist Anaé will present her show Al otro lado del Atlántico. On Wednesday, August 12, the town will host the fourth Villa de Candelaria International Folklore Festival, featuring the Chajoigo Folklore Group and Mexico’s Iskali Dance Company. Like all previous events, these performances are free to attend until the venue reaches capacity. These gatherings serve as a lead-up to the main festivities on August 15, when the town pays tribute to the Virgin of Candelaria.
