The Pichón Trail Project is hosting a 12-hour charity swim in Candelaria this Sunday to raise funds and awareness for individuals living with multiple sclerosis.

This weekend, the town of Candelaria is shining a light on neurodegenerative diseases through a unique charity swimming event. Organized by the Pichón Trail Project, the initiative aims to raise vital funds for people living with multiple sclerosis—a condition that affects thousands across Spain and requires ongoing support for rehabilitation and home care.

The event, titled "Enchúmbate," takes place this Sunday at the Círculo de Amistad XII de Enero facilities in Barranco Hondo. From 8:30 a.m. to 8:30 p.m., participants will keep the water in constant motion, aiming to swim more than the 122,100 meters achieved at last year’s event in La Laguna. Rather than a competition, this is a collective effort, with every stroke serving as a symbol of resilience against the disease.

Ramón Guillermo García Manrique, a Canary Islands police sub-commissioner and the event's founder, is calling on the public to help keep the relay going throughout the day. This year, the organizers have replaced the traditional registration fee with a "reverse box office" system. Swimmers and spectators are encouraged to make voluntary donations, with every cent going directly toward essential patient needs, such as physiotherapy and specialized equipment.

Multiple sclerosis is often called the "disease of a thousand faces" because its symptoms vary so widely, making it both a clinical and social challenge. Supported by the Candelaria City Council and various private sponsors, this event is a crucial way to raise awareness, as early diagnosis and consistent therapy are key to improving a patient's quality of life. Following last year’s success with 120 volunteers, organizers are hopeful that this year’s turnout will break records and cement the event as a landmark of solidarity in the Canary Islands.
