Candelaria Council Approves €9.9 Million Indoor Pool Project After Years of Delays
Candelaria City Council has officially approved the 9.9 million euro bidding process for a new indoor swimming pool, finally moving forward after years of legal and administrative delays.
Candelaria City Council is moving forward with plans to build a new indoor swimming pool, ending years of legal delays and administrative gridlock. The council has officially approved the bidding process for the project, which is now estimated to cost over 9.9 million euros—a significant increase from previous attempts due to updated budget requirements.
The project has faced a difficult history. In 2017, the High Court of Justice of the Canary Islands cancelled the original contract, leading to the tender being scrapped a year later. Residents have been waiting for a resolution for years, as the current pool remains closed due to ongoing issues with coastal administrative permits.
The new facility will be built on a 3,210-square-meter site currently used as a parking lot. Plans include two swimming pools, a gym, changing rooms, and a 63-space parking area. The upper level will feature multipurpose rooms and space for physical training.
In the same session, the council unanimously approved the statutes for the Valle de Güímar Industrial Estate’s conservation entity, a key step toward better managing the area. Mayor Mari Brito described these decisions as major achievements in overcoming bureaucratic challenges, crediting the municipal secretary, Octavio Fernández, for his technical support.
Finally, the council approved the use of 1.7 million euros from the city’s budget surplus. With support from the PSOE, this funding will go toward road repairs, salary adjustments for municipal staff, and updated agreements with the CD Takanara Volleyball Club and the CD Caparina Badminton Club.
